Vancomycin

Composition

A single-dose vial of vancomycin consists of vancomycin hydrochloride sterile, which is equivalent to 500 mg of vancomycin.

Indications

Usage of vancomycin is indicated in the treatment of postoperative fever, wound-related infections, bacteremia, meningitis, endocarditis, neutropenia, skin structure-associated infections, prosthetic infections, pneumonia, chronic otitis media, and other ear infections, febrile neutropenia.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effects have been observed, such as fever, chills, flushing, and nausea. Ototoxicity, Nephrotoxicity, Infusion Site-Related Pain, and, in severe cases, thrombophlebitis and edema in some cases.

Precautions

To be prescribed cautiously in patients with complaints of tinnitus, dizziness, or any other central nervous system-related disorders.

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with hepatic disorders and kidney dysfunction.

Dosage and administration

The usual dosage in adults is 500 mg intravenously every 6 hours or 1 gram I.V. over 12 hours.
