Tobramycin

Composition

A single-dose vial of 1 ml of tobramycin contains 40 mg of tobramycin equivalent as its constituents. Inactive ingredients consist of boric acid, sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, tyloxapol, sodium hydroxide, and benzalkonium chloride 0.01%.

Indications

The use of tobramycin is indicated in the treatment of various serious bacterial infections, such as septicemia caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa, lower respiratory tract infections due to klebsiella species, serratia species, and S. aureus-associated infections.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effects have been observed, such as pain at the injection site, itching, hives, a skin rash in some cases, tingling in the hands, arms, or feet, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal or stomach pain.

Precautions

To be prescribed cautiously in patients with a history of difficulty in breathing, drowsiness, or weakness.

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with a previous history of hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any of its constituents, or in patients allergic to aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Dosage and administration

The usual dose in adults consists of 3-6 mg/kg/day in intravenous or intramuscular doses divided every 8 hours.
