Tetracycline
Composition
A single capsule of tetracycline containing 250 mg or 500 mg contains 250 mg or 500 mg of tetracycline hydrochloride equivalent. Other ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, pregelatinized starch, propylene glycol, stearic acid, and titanium dioxide.
Indications
Its use is indicated in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenza, lower respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Mycoplasma pneumonia, skin-related infections such as chancroid, tularaemia, cholera, brucellosis, anthrax, and actinomycosis.
Side effects
Mild to moderate side effects have been observed, such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, glossitis, epigastric distress, enamel hypoplasia, discoloration of teeth, an erythematous rash, urticaria, and fever.
Precautions
This drug is to be cautiously prescribed in cases of superinfections in adults with intracranial hypertension. to be used cautiously when prescribed in cases of hepatic disorders.
Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated in patients with a previous history of hypersensitivity to any drugs in the tetracycline class.
Dosage and administration
In adults, the usual dose consists of one 250-mg tablet taken orally once a day, to be taken postmeal. The usual dose of 500 mg PO, once a day post meals.
