Omega-3-acid ethyl esters
Composition
Contains ethyl esters of omega-3 fatty acids— primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Indications
Used to reduce very high triglyceride levels and as adjunct therapy to diet to reduce cardiovascular risk.
Side effects
Fishy aftertaste, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, burping, rash.
Precautions
Use cautiously in patients with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulants; may increase bleeding risk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fish, shellfish, or product components.
Dosage and administration
Typically 2–4 grams daily in divided doses with meals.
