Meropenem

Composition

A single dose vial of this drug consists of meropenem trihydrate, equivalent to 500 mg of the constituent anhydrous meropenem. Sodium is present as sodium carbonate, one of its constituents.

Indications

Usage of this drug is indicated in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, and skin structure-associated infections both complicated and uncomplicated in nature, and intra-abdominal infections.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effects have been observed. Side effects such as nausea, rashes, neutropenia, apnea, glossitis, pruritus, thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver function tests.

Precautions

To be prescribed cautiously in patients with a history of disorders of the central nervous system such as seizures, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Steven Johnson syndrome, Erythema multiforme, and allergic reactions.

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to this drug or drugs from this class.

Dosage and administration

In adults, the usual dosage consists of 500 mg I.V. over eight hours; the dose should not exceed 2 g I.V. eight hours.
