Medroxyprogesterone

Composition

Contains Medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin.

Indications

Used for contraception, treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, secondary amenorrhea, and as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Side effects

Weight gain, menstrual changes, headache, mood swings, decreased bone mineral density

Precautions

Monitor bone health during long-term use; use cautiously in patients with a history of thromboembolism or depression.

Contraindications

Pregnancy, active thromboembolic disorders, liver disease, known or suspected breast or genital cancers.

Dosage and administration

Oral: 2.5–10 mg daily; IM injection: 150 mg every 3 months for contraception; Subcutaneous: 104 mg every 3 months.
