Gentamicin

Composition

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with bactericidal activity. Each 50 mg consists of Gentamicin Sulfate USP, equivalent to 100 mg IP of gentamycin, and 450 mg sodium chloride USP.

Indications

The use of gentamycin is indicated in the treatment of bacterial infections, respiratory tract infections, septicaemia, soft tissue infections, skin infections associated with spina bifida, bone joint infections, and other related infections.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effects have been observed. Side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fever, tinnitus, ototoxicity, and rashes.

Precautions

Gentamicin is to be prescribed cautiously in patients with renal failure, patients undergoing I.V. contrast, and patients with nervous system disorders.

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with a previous history of hypersensitivity to drugs of the cephalosporin class, patients with renal impairment, and patients with hepatic disorders.

Dosage and administration

In adults, the usual dosage consists of 2.5 mg/kg/dose administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 18 to 24 hours.
