Ceftriaxone
Composition
A single-dose vial of Ceftriaxone contains ceftriaxone sodium, equivalent to 1 gram of ceftriaxone. Every single gram of ceftriaxone consists of 82 mg of sodium.
Indications
Usage of ceftriaxone is indicated in the treatment of acute bacterial otitis media, intra-abdominal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, septic shock, skin structure-related infections, severe acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, sinusitis, soft tissue necrotizing infections, prosthetic joint infections, epiglottitis, and acute epididymitis.
Side effects
Mild to moderate side effects have been observed. Side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, dizziness, anemia, excessive sweating, flushing, Headache, rash, change in taste, loss of appetite, overactive reflexes, and upset stomach.
Precautions
This drug is to be prescribed with caution in patients with gastrointestinal diseases, immune-mediated disorders, superinfections, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, pancreatitis, or biliary obstruction.
Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to it or any other drugs or members of the cephalosporin class.
Dosage and administration
The typical adult dosage is 1 gram intravenous route administered 12 hours per day.
