Ceftazidime
Composition
A single-dose vial of Ceftazidime contains 1 g of the drug in pentahydrate form. Every single gram of ceftazidime consists of 52 mg of sodium.
Indications
Usage of ceftazidime is indicated in the treatment of pneumonia, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, lower respiratory tract infections, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint-related infections, meningitis, and skin-related infections.
Side effects
Mild to moderate side effects have been observed, such as redness, swelling, and pain at the injection site; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and, in some cases, dizziness; pruritus, rash, and phlebitis.
Precautions
This medication is to be used cautiously in patients with seizure disorders, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability or disorders, or patients with increased prothrombin time.
Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Dosage and administration
Adults are usually given 1 gram intravenously or intramuscularly. 8 -12 hourly.
