Cefotaxime

Composition

A single-dose vial of cefotaxime contains cefotaxime sodium, equivalent to 500 mg in 1 g of cefotaxime.

Indications

Cefotaxime is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, bacterial septicemia, bacterial meningitis, gonococcal infections, upper respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, osteomyelitis, cervicitis, endometriosis, and other infections such as epiglottitis, pyoderma, and pyelonephritis subcutaneous abscesses.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effects have been observed. Side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fever, rash, pruritus, thrombocytopenia, injection site pain, Transient neutropenia, eosinophilia, diarrhea, and colitis in some cases due to overuse.

Precautions

To be prescribed cautiously in patients with liver disorders and renal impairment, as this might cause severe adverse effects.

Contraindications

Cefotaxime is contraindicated in patients with a known history of allergy to the cephalosporin group of drugs. Patients with known hypersensitivity.

Dosage and administration

For adult patients, a Single dose of 1 g I.V/I.M is to be given 12 hourly. In case of life-threatening infections, up to 12 grams of the daily dose—2 grams every 4 hours—should be given by I.V. route.
