Levonorgestrel
Composition
Contains Levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin.
Indications
Used for emergency contraception, long-term contraception (intrauterine devices), and in combination oral contraceptives.
Side effects
Nausea, menstrual changes, breast tenderness, fatigue, headache.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with a history of ectopic pregnancy, liver disease, or thromboembolic disorders.
Contraindications
Known or suspected pregnancy (for emergency use), active liver disease, hormone-sensitive cancers (for long-term use).
Dosage and administration
Emergency contraception: 1.5 mg single dose (or 0.75 mg twice, 12 hours apart). IUD: Delivers 13–52 mcg/day over 3–8 years.
